Setting up for success - Project update 5

We wrapped up Alpha by documenting the path to a successful MVP!

Project overview

Setting a product or project up in the right way is vital to its success.

In government, those new to setting up products and projects are having to navigate this ‘pre-mobilisation, or, ‘pre-discovery’ phase using a variety of tools, resources and people that are available to them, resulting in a lack of confidence from an unspecified way to do it in NSW Government.

Setting a product or project up for success exists to give people a documented way for beginning work; something that will inspire confidence as well as empower them to ask the right questions and build the right momentum.

We believe that by improving mobilisation, we can improve product and project outcomes, as well as establish effective practice in an otherwise fractured space.

We have now completed Discovery and Alpha and are ready for Beta

Discovery

Our objective in Discovery was to understand the current mobilisation landscape and identify opportunities to improve the way it was done in NSW Government.

Outcome:

Our discovery resulted in a refined project objective:

Fulfil the user need for contextual guidance with effective practice so that a higher standard is set for mobilising in NSW Government, and more people are enabled to achieve it.

This was made up of 3 key tasks:

  1. Establish the NSW Government point of view on mobilisation, as it relates to the NSW Agile Delivery model.

  2. Document the fundamental practices of effective mobilisation in contextual guidance.

  3. Model an approach for lifting the standard of practices as conditions allow it.

Alpha

Our objective in Alpha was to find a way to deliver on the project objective:

Fulfil the user need for contextual guidance with effective practice so that a higher standard is set for mobilising in NSW Government, and more people are enabled to achieve it.

We combined our learnings and recommendations from discovery with two fundemntal questions we wanted to answer in Alpha:

  1. What is the content or info users need to successfully mobilise?

  2. How is that information findable, discoverable, applicable for users?

Our approach to Alpha

Beta

Our objective for beta is to deliver a Minimum Viable Product for “Setting up for Success”
This includes creating the minimum version of the following to deliver user value:

  • Product format
  • Product function
  • Content

Next steps

In order to take that next step, we’ll be reviewing the other projects abd priorities of our branch and putting a case forward for continued investment.
